As a student in the Dance Department of the Faculty of Performing Arts at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta, the opportunity to undertake studies for one semester at The University of Adelaide became a pivotal point in my academic and personal journey.

The decision to choose The University of Adelaide was initially based on fairly simple considerations. I matched my university choices with my English language proficiency and the available courses at the time of application. However, beyond these technical considerations, I discovered a learning environment that exposed me to new perspectives I had never encountered during my studies in Indonesia.

One of the most memorable courses for me was People, Cultures, Societies: Doing Anthropology. As a performing arts student, studying anthropology offers a very engaging intellectual experience because I am encouraged to view society and culture through a more critical and reflective lens. The lectures don't just discuss culture as mere identity or tradition, but as something alive, negotiated, and constantly changing in everyday life. From there, I began to understand that art, the body, and cultural practices are closely related to how humans construct meaning in their lives.

Facing a completely new learning system is certainly not easy. The use of English in academic discussions, the fast pace of lectures, and the demand to read various materials every week were significant challenges in the early days of college. I felt left behind and struggled to keep up with the class dynamics. However, this situation gradually fostered more disciplined study habits and also trained my courage to actively express my opinions, even though I was still in the process of adapting. Amidst this process, I managed to achieve a score of 94 in my anthropology course. For me, this achievement is not just an academic number, but a symbol of my ability to persevere and thrive in an unfamiliar environment. This score serves as a reminder that language limitations or differences in learning systems are not always obstacles as long as one has the will to keep learning and strive to understand new things.

Outside the classroom, life during the exchange program also brought me many enriching moments that shaped my perspective on social relations and the environment. One of the most memorable activities was participating in a tree-planting volunteer program with Waite Conservation Reserve. This simple activity provided a reflection on the importance of collective responsibility for environmental sustainability. I saw how concern for nature is not just a discourse but is also realized through concrete actions taken together with the community.

In addition, I was also entrusted to fulfill the role of Student Representative. This responsibility taught me that leadership isn't always about being out in front, but rather about being ready to show up, listen, and help others navigate similar challenges. Living in a new country made me realize that everyone is struggling in their own way to adapt. From there, I learned to be more sensitive to the needs of others while also becoming more responsible for myself.

For me, this program isn't just about academic mobility or opportunities to study abroad. More than that, this program has become a space to understand how one can grow when faced with an unfamiliar and diverse environment. As an art student, I feel that the cultural diversity I encountered while in Australia broadened my sensitivity in observing the relationship between art, identity, and social life.

Ultimately, this journey made me understand that the learning process doesn't always happen in a studio or classroom. Sometimes, learning actually occurs when someone has to step out of their comfort zone, face uncertainty, and find new ways to understand the world. Through this opportunity, I not only brought home academic knowledge but also a new perspective on courage, adaptation, and the meaning of growth as both a human and an artist.
