ISI Yogyakarta Dance Study Program Successfully Holds IDCF 2025

The Dance Study Program, Faculty of Performing Arts ISI Yogyakarta will present the fourth International Dance Conference and Festival (IDCF) on November 3, 2025. With the theme “Dancing Through the Digital Wilds: Reconstructing Ecological Sensibility,” this festival is a space for ideas and practices to meet between the body, technology, and nature. The theme invites artists and audiences to revisit the relationship between humans and the environment through dance performances in the midst of rapid and complex digital disruption.

IDCF 2025 activities include conferences, workshops, and international dance performances.
From 09.00-12.00 WIB, the workshop took place in the Pendapa area, Studio 1, and Studio 2 of the Dance Department, with guest choreographers from various countries as speakers. Workshop participants-consisting of dance students and art communities-explored various creative approaches in Dayak Dance of Central Kalimantan, Ram Wong of Thailand, and Nanguan Xi (Taiwan). This activity opens space for cross-cultural learning, enriches perspectives on movement, and brings together tradition and innovation.

In the morning session, a Conference Sharing Session "Cultural Diversity: Challenges and Perspectives" in collaboration with The 70th Asia-Africa Celebration at Sasana Ajiyasa, Faculty of Fine Arts ISI Yogyakarta. Keynote speaker Dr. Hilmar Farid reflected on the Bandung legacy and the connection between Asia and Africa since pre-colonial times. Other speakers included Darwis Khudori (Indonesia/France), Beatriz Bissio (Brazil), Galih Prakasiwi (ISI Yogyakarta), Fulufhelo Netswera (South Africa), Seema Mehra Parihar (India), and Diana Sfetlana Stoica (Romania/Hungary).

Meanwhile, the IDCF 2025 performance was held in the evening at 19.30 WIB at the Art Laboratory, featuring five works by Lucky Wisnu (Indonesia), Collaboration of Central Kalimantan Dayak Customary Council & ISI Yogyakarta, Samuel (Malaysia), Navee Sasongkroh (Thailand), and Yalan Lin (Taiwan). Each work presents a personal interpretation of life in the midst of the vortex of digital progress and human connection with nature. The bodies of the dancers become a medium of reflection between ecological sensibility and technological experimentation, building an actual artistic dialog.

Through the implementation of IDCF 2025, the Dance Study Program of ISI Yogyakarta seeks to increase public ecological awareness through performing arts. This festival is also a place to voice the message of environmental sustainability creatively, encourage the creation of works that are oriented towards ecological principles, and revive the values of local wisdom that strengthen the relationship between humans and nature.

 

IDCF 2023

International Dance Conference and Festival (IDCF) #3 was held again by Dance Study Program ISI Yogyakarta

The third International Dance Conference and Festival (IDCF) on October 20-21, 2023. This event is a biennial agenda organized to increase knowledge and provide networking space for dance artists and academics from within and outside the country. The International Dance Conference and Festival (IDCF) consists of two main activities: dance performances and international seminars.

This year IDCF carries the theme “Revisit Dance: Body and Movement”. Body and movement are the main aspects of dance, the discussion of dance in the academic realm is not only about moving the body but also about how to practice and theorize it. This theme means that we will look at and explore dance as a term, practice, and presentation of movement in the past, present, and future. The discourse will be rolled out in two different forms of activities, namely performances and seminars.

On the first day, October 20, 2023, there will be dance performances from various countries, namely Fairul Zahid (LaSalle College of the Arts Singapore), Lili Wen (Chongqing University of Humanities and Technology, China), Hendro Martono and Ni Kadek Rai Dewi Astini (Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta), Lampung University, and Institut Seni Budaya Indonesia (ISBI) Aceh. Collaborative performances will also be performed by Anna Thu Schmidt (Germany) with dancers from MBKM Dance Study Program ISI Yogyakarta “Astagala Project”. Rachel Siringan (Philippines) and Agata Sokol (Poland) will also perform a dance performance with multimedia with students of MBKM Dance Study Program ISI Yogyakarta “Arus Project”. The repertoire will be performed in the ISI Yogyakarta Art Laboratory building and in the courtyard of the Faculty of Recording Media Arts ISI Yogyakarta, starting at 19.30. The second day, October 21, 2023 at 08.30 will be held a seminar entitled “Revisit Dance: Body and Movement” held in a hybrid with keynote speaker Dr. Emma Meehan (Centre for Dance Research, Coventry University, United Kingdom), speakers Anna Thu Schmidt (Germany), Fairul Zahid, MFA (LaSalle College of the Arts Singapore), and Dra. Daruni, M.Hum (ISI Yogyakarta).

IDCF: Celebrating International Dance Collaboration Online in the Midst of Pandemic #2

2nd International Dance Conference and Festival (IDCF) organized by online by the ISI Yogyakarta Dance Study Program as an adaptive response to the global pandemic situation. Although not carried out offline, the spirit of knowledge exchange and artistic collaboration is maintained in an innovative and inclusive virtual format.

 During the Covid-19 pandemic, dance performances were no longer allowed to be performed offline. Even dance performances for tourism activities were stopped. This situation ultimately requires dance actors to behave and act more creatively. Dance artists began to utilize Youtube or other social media platforms as a space to hold dance performances and communicate their creative ideas.

To conduct a deeper observation and study of various contextual issues in the world of performing arts (especially dance), the Dance Study Program, Faculty of Performing Arts ISI Yogyakarta intends to organize The 2 nd International Dance Conference and Festival (IDCF) 2021 which will be held online from 28 to 30 October 2021 on the ISI Yogyakarta Campus. This IDCF 2021 activity takes the theme “Dance: Adaptation During Covid 19 Pandemic” as an answer to how dance higher education institutions adapt during this pandemic. IDCF 2021 will feature dance works and scientific research papers presented in virtual dance performances and webinars.

The International Dance Conference will be held online on October 28, 2021, starting at 8.30 WIB. Meanwhile, the Dance Festival will be held for three days from October 28 to 30, 2021 and can be watched starting October 28, 2021, at 20.00 WIB.

The International Conference will present Gusti Kanjeng Ratu Hayu as the keynote speaker and several other speakers from Indonesia, the United States, France, Taiwan, Thailand and Malaysia. This international seminar will be moderated by M. Heni Winahyuningsing, Silvia Purba and Sarjiwo. The International Dance Conference will be opened by the Rector of ISI Yogyakarta, Prof. Dr. M. Agus Burhan, M.Hum. and the Dean of the Faculty of Performing Arts, Drs. Siswadi, M.Sn.

IDCF 2021 will also feature 19 virtual dance performances over 3 days. The dancers who will perform at the 2021 Dance festival come from Indonesia, Taiwan, China, Ecuador, the United States and Japan. In this virtual dance performance, the public can watch traditional and virtual dance performances.

ISI Yogyakarta Dance Study Program Organizes International Dance Conference and Festival (IDCF) #1

The Dance Study Program, Faculty of Performing Arts, ISI Yogyakarta, proudly organizes  International Dance Conference anf Festival (IDCF) #1. The festival is a creative meeting space for young choreographers, academics, and dance communities from various parts of Indonesia and internationally to share ideas, works, and innovative artistic practices.

From within the country, among others, Kemenristekdikti, Kemendikbud, ISI Surakarta, ISI Padang Panjang, ISBI Bandung, Kraton Yogyakarta and Pura Pakualaman. Meanwhile, from abroad, those involved include California Institute of the Arts, Victoria College of the Arts, Melbourne University, Shrinakarinwirot University Thailand, Visual Theater Company CCOT Korea, Dana Taisoon Burgess, and Ari Rudenko (USA). This effort to collaborate with foreign art universities is a form of commitment so that the MoU that has been established is not just a form of cooperation. sleeping MoU.

The event will take place for 2 days, namely on October 27, at the Department of Dance FSP ISI Yogyakrta, and October 28, 2019 at the Concert Hall ISI Yogyakarta. The institutions involved, namely Kraton Yogya, will perform the opening dance Beksan Bugis for the Opening Conference on October 28 at 9 am WIB, while at Pura Pakualaman the performance is in the evening of October 27, 2019.

With the implementation of IDCF #1 on the ISI Yogyakarta campus, it is hoped that a collaborative and transformative dance ecosystem will be formed, which is able to strengthen the position of world dance art.
